Adding Sustainability To

Petroleum Industry

Because of its unequaled success in eliminating pollutants to generate purer refined goods, the petroleum sector, which produces fuel, polymers, and even pharmaceutical raw materials, is highly reliant on the usage of activated carbon as an adsorbent. Furthermore, it offers an efficient technique for collecting and sorting the various by-products of the refining process, which are important in a variety of other applications.

Activated carbon also helps to maintain process efficiency by minimizing corrosion and wasting of equipment and expensive catalysts caused by high amounts of specific compounds generated during refining, while allowing for resource recycling and so lowering process costs.

This well-rounded combination of benefits, not to mention the level of sustainability it adds to operations, makes Ceycarb’s activated carbon products, along with our expertise in implementing these solutions, your best choice for guaranteeing better, purer yields that are good for your company, your consumers, and your environment.

Air/Gas Purifiers

Gaseous byproducts of the refinery process can pose potent health and environmental risks due to the dangerous contaminants produced, which calls for stringent filtration and foolproof storage to prevent contaminants from leaking. Activated carbon has become a go-to solution in this regard, due to its effectiveness in eliminating sulfur compounds, mercury, organics, Sulfuric compounds, and other contaminants produced in refineries.

The potent adsorption levels offered through Ceycarb’s activated carbon products including sulfur impregnated pellets and solutions open an ideal pathway to controlling the levels of such by-products so that any emissions not only meet international standards but also prevent damage to the processing facility and its surrounding environment over the long term.

Hydrogen Sulfide Removal

Hydrogen Sulfide is an acidic, toxic, corrosive, and noxious substance that can damage any organic or inorganic material it comes in contact with, requiring the most stringent control standards to prevent health and safety hazards. Removing this by-product from any industrial process is a must, not least to comply with emission regulations. Especially, the formation of H2S often results in sour crude oil processing. This H2S results in negative implications such as corrosion in pipes and equipment, objectionable odor, hazardous health impacts, etc. Hence, the removal of H2S in refineries is very important.

The activated carbon solutions Ceycarb offers can ensure that those levels of this toxic by-product are managed efficiently to allow the sustainable operation of a plant without risk to human life, equipment, or the ecosystem, as Ceycarb’s special impregnated and catalytic products with high H2S adsorption capacity, ie. 0.3g/cc H2S breakthrough capacity, can undertake the adsorption of such compounds effectively and economically.

Sweetening

The process of sweetening involves the removal of Sulfuric organic compounds, most of which are also known as mercaptans, characterized by a pungent odor that belies their highly corrosive properties. These require precise filtration methods to prevent their escape into the atmosphere, or even the plant itself, due to their corrosive nature.

In this regard, activated carbons can be used as a catalytic carrier or catalyze the extraction of Sulphur-based contaminants in hydrocarbon products produced in refineries through the adsorption method, while they can also be treated to remove other contaminants at the same time, providing a total and efficient filtration system.

Mercury Removal

Mercury, while valuable, can prove to be highly toxic, especially in its gaseous form, while it also has the potential to accumulate and completely destroy heat exchangers in processing plants. In fact, mercury corrosion has been the cause of failures in plants across the world, despite initial testing showing insufficient amounts of mercury to cause such problems. These damages are not only expensive and time-consuming to repair, but they also pose a significant health and safety hazard.
It so happens that activated carbon has long been a trusted solution for the adsorption of mercury when it is impregnated with a compound that can chemically react with the mercury and ensure its removal. Ceycarb’s activated carbon solutions allow a balance between sufficient impregnation to ensure mercury removal while allowing a complex enough pore structure to be exposed to as much of the gas as possible, preventing all but negligible trace amounts from escaping filtration.

Solvent Recovery

Industrial processes often involve the use of solvents, which while valuable, may potentially evaporate during the process or end up unused, leading to the waste of a vital resource. Here, the adsorption process afforded by activated carbon can help collect these unused compounds for later use, with the solvent-rich air being passed through an activated carbon filter until it reaches the saturation point. Then, pressurized steam is used for desorption to recover these valuable solvents so that they can be used again. At refineries and terminals, economically valuable products such as gasoline vapors, benzene, solvents, etc. are recovered using activated carbon.

Thus, Ceycarb can supplement your processes with an economically efficient recovery process that recovers a vital resource that may have otherwise been discarded as waste, thus bringing down overall costs as well as ecological impact.

Gas Scrubbing

Gas scrubbers are used to treat gas treatment liquids such as Benefield solution, DEA, MEA etc. The removal of inorganic compound gases such as Hydrogen Sulfide and carbon dioxide from natural gas requires amines, which dissolve and remove these compounds from refinery gases, in a process known as “sweetening”. However, the amines themselves require treatment to maintain their purity so that they can effectively conduct the adsorption process without having to be replaced repeatedly.

Ceycarb can provide an adequate supply of activated carbon for this process, with the ideal pore size and particle distribution to match the scale of your processing plant’s requirements, allowing the recovery of treatment solutions for further adsorption, thus boosting overall efficiency.

Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater in the petroleum industry is contaminated with Phenol, Benzene, heavy metals, and a combination of BTX. BOD level of the water reads as 150 – 250 mg/l while that of COD reads as 300 – 600 mg/l.
Ceycarb offers catalytic products for the efficient removal of hydrocarbons, Phenols, Ammoniacal Nitrogen, BTX, and heavy metals. Moreover, the products are capable of reducing BOD and COD levels down to a value very much below the environmental standards.
In addition, problems such as objectionable sulfur taste, “rotten egg” odor, corrosions in drainage pipes, and corrosion in concrete sewers are associated with wastewater containing sulfur compounds. Ceycarb offers products and services to solve these problems efficiently, reliably, and cost-effectively, increasing economies of scale in the plant.
Ceycarb offers a series of products that are used in fixed bed filters or in a pseudo-moving bed configuration while PAC products are used in combination with the activated sludge process and in coagulation/ flocculation tanks.

Boiler Feed Water Treatment

Properly treated water has to be fed to the boilers in order to prevent problems such as:

  • VOC carries over to the steam
  • Over consumption of boiler water treatment chemicals
  • Corrosion
  • Foaming
  • Scaling

Ceycarb offers CEWC- low silica activated carbon grades for this application.
